Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente
Roberto Clemente became a baseball legend during the 1960s and 70s with his explosive throwing arm, lightning speed, and consistently high batting average, but he was much more than an astounding athlete. For millions of fans across the world, especially in his native Puerto Rico and throughout Latin America, Clemente was a cultural hero who gave underprivileged people a voice. His story—a study in character, drive, and the ascendancy of man to myth—is told in Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente. Organized by the Smithsonian Institution, Beyond Baseball includes biographical highlights, baseball statistics, rare photographs, and the insightful words of the people who knew Clemente best.

Over the Tavern
It’s 1959 in Buffalo, New York – Elvis, drive-ins, and The Honeymooners made life fun and simple. Not for the Pazinski household though! Polish-Catholics Chet and Ellen live above their tavern with their four teenagers, each questioning family values in their own mischievous ways. And when wise-cracking 12 year-old Rudy questions the Roman Catholic Church to rulercracking Sister Clarissa before his confirmation, the outcome is a hilarious yet touching comedy that would even make the Cleavers at a loss for good advice. Dinner Packages available from $46.50. Overnight Packages available starting at $179.

03/09/10 Global Flicks: Moolaade
Global Flicks explores our global society through eight outstanding international films presented in their original language with English subtitles. Films are curated by John Rangel, motion picture/television professor at College of DuPage. Films are shown at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. in the McAninch Arts Center Mainstage. Admission is free. Pioneering Senegalese filmmaker Ousmane Sembene directed this controversial drama that deals in part with the barbaric practice of female genital mutilation (generally involving removal of the clitoris and temporary closure of the vagina), which is still practiced in a number of African nations in the name of "purification." Six girls who are scheduled to undergo the traditional purification ceremony escape, and four make their way to the home of Colle Ardo Gallo Sy (Fatoumata Coulibaly), a wife and mother who is sympathetic to their dilemma. Colle casts a "moolaade" spell, which will bring harm to anyone who attempts to hurt those under Colle's care. Colle finds few supporters in a village where tradition is sacred and change is regarded with great suspicion; the men who rule the tribe and the women who conduct the purification rituals both make their displeasure clear, but none can persuade Colle to vanquish the spell, which the others are obligated to respect.
